In 1994, Dan Jakana, current CEO of Jakana Foods Ltd, had a vision to bring his US food production experience back to Uganda. Starting with a blender in his mom’s kitchen, JFL quickly became the leading Banana Juice supplier in Uganda and the region. After a full factory expansion funded by ADF in 2004, he built up his facility with the ability to process 7000Liters of fresh juice per day. He added Pineapple, Orange, Mango, Passion and Tropical Punch All Natural Juices.

In 2014, JFL was approached to expand its operation to provide organic certified dried fruit for the USA market. After 9 months of training, inspections and audits, in Feb 2015, JFL received its NOP and EU834/2007 Organic certifications (2015-through March 2019) and Fair For Life Social and Fair Trade (2015 – June 2018) certifications for the following dried fruits: Mango, Pineapple, Banana, Papaya, and Jackfruit.

Thanks to the support of aBi Trust Agribusiness Initiative based in Kampala Uganda, we have added another 100+ registered farmers to our Organic certified farmers growers list, and we will empower 4 groups of farmers with traditional solar dryers so they can learn the skills of producing quality dried fruit for local, regional, and international markets.

Thanks to the worldwide support of KIVA lenders, we have added new Harvest Saver dryers, adding to the processing power to deliver higher quality dried fruit products to our customers.  We have capacity of up to 2MT per month of dried fruit, and are looking for investments to add even more driers to increase our quality capacity.

Thanks to the support of COLEACP, we shall be moving forward to achieve HACCP and ISO22000 compliance in order to bring more high quality products to the EU community and beyond.

Later  in 2018, we plan to expand our regional and international presence with the return of long shelf life packaging for its juice and dried fruit business.

As of July 2018, we have focused our fair trade program under a direct trade model, using the principles of fairness to our entire value chain and the environment as our guiding principles.  Buyers are encouraged to work with us to support our community development efforts through fair trade premiums which are given directly back to the communities we work within.

JFL has expanded production to include organic jackfruit seed flour, spiced dried fruits, energy bars, banana vinegar, and juice pulp.
