About us

Our history

30 Years of Legacy

Founded in 1994 by Dan Jakana, now retired. Jakana Foods began as a small-scale operation in his mother’s kitchen.

Drawing from his food production experience in the United States, JFL quickly gained recognition as the leading Banana Juice supplier in Uganda and the region. In 2004, with funding from ADF, we underwent a full factory expansion, enabling us to process 7000 L of fresh juice daily. Our product range expanded to include Pineapple, Orange, Mango, Passion, and Tropical Punch natural fruit juices.

Our Philosophy

Organic Standards

In 2014, JFL expanded its operations to provide organic certified dried fruit, catering to the discerning tastes of the USA market.

Even today, with our conventional offerings, our commitment to standards ensures that our products meet the highest quality and sustainability requirements.

Fruit and Product Variety

Our focus remains on all-natural fruit products, including a range of flavored options. We have become the premier expert of Dried Mango, Dried Pineapple, and Dried Jackfruit. We encourage you to order a sampler pack, featuring different types and flavors of dried fruit. We are confident that once you experience the quality and taste of our products, you’ll become a valued returning customer.

Direct Trade

Since July 2018, we have embraced a direct trade model, prioritizing fairness throughout our value chain and environmental responsibility.

Through our fair trade program, buyers are encouraged to collaborate with us to support community development efforts. Fair trade premiums directly benefit the communities we work with, creating a positive impact on the local economy and society.

HACCP & Food Safety

At Jakana Foods LTD, food safety is a priority. This is why we are committed to following the seven principles of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) management system, as defined by the U.S. FDA. HACCP is a systematic approach to the identification, evaluation and control of food safety hazards. Food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical, and physical hazards from raw material production, procurement and handling, to manufacturing, distribution and consumption of the finished product (FDA, 2017).  With the support of COLEACP, we shall conclude our internal training of HACCP in 2024 and get our certification in 2024.  Uganda National Bureau of Standards Certificate of analysis tests are currently available upon request.

Our Out-Grower Scheme

Knowing exactly where your food comes from builds community and connects people in new ways as the world comes together to make it a better place than when we got here. We purchase our fruit directly from hundreds of farmers in Kayunga, Kangulumira, Luwero, Nakaseke, and Ntungamo Districts to bring you high quality organic fruit products. We operate under the principles of Direct Trade programs to ensure the protection of our environment using organic practices and principles, fair wages for our workers, and fair trade for our farmers.
